Found.

Our friend just graduated and is going across the world to Singapore to begin his new job!  So we decided to meet at Found in Evanston for a going-away meal together.  Found Kitchen is a rustic restaurant that is furnished with a mix of tables and chairs that are considered antiques, giving the place a very homey feel.  And you may just fall asleep in the comfy, cushioned seats after a filling meal!

Grilled Slagel Farm Steak with potato pancake, sour cream and spring onion relish

Currently, they are offering a grilled steak that I found to be mediocre but still enjoyed.  It was a tad bit chewier than I normally like my medium-rare steaks, and it could have been seasoned a bit more.  Nevertheless, the dish worked as a whole with the crispy potato pancakes and sour cream!

The starters, which included cheese and drinks for us, were superb.  The cheeses they offer here are on the milder side, but that’s not at all a criticism!  They each have distinct flavors and textures that will blow you away with the fresh jam, nuts and dried fruits on crispy slices of bread.  And as you nibble on these snacks, make sure you order a couple cocktails to sip on.  Our waitress suggested spectacular drinks per our requirements (I wanted something girly and sweet so I ended up with a fruity, pisco based cocktail!).

Grilled purple and green asparagus with charred ramp vinaigrette

Since our friend is a vegetarian, we ordered a number of vegetarian dishes, which we found to profoundly surpass the carnivorous ones!  These grilled asparagus were tart from the acidity but also had a nice balance from the oil.

Together, these photos make the dishes look so healthy!  The beet salad was very refreshing.  The char was perfect because it added a secondary level of smokiness to the dish.  I highly recommend this salad, especially if you love beets!  And the flat bread on the right had a beautiful crisp around the edges.  I also learned that I actually enjoy arugula once it’s been heated a bit – the bitterness just disappears.

Whole roasted shrimp with spring onion, green garlic and asparagus

These prawns were a concentration of delightful flavors, especially in the head!  I love it when restaurants present shrimp with the head on because that is when you know it will be yummy as long as they aren’t overcooked.  And these were taken out of the pan just in time!  The only downside was that there weren’t more in the dish!

Harissa roasted heirloom carrots, frisee, cilantro and pepita

These roasted carrots were definitely a surprise.  The other dishes we had been served so far had been pretty mild, so when we took a bite of these very spicy, bold flavors, our taste buds were shocked!  The harissa was definitely overwhelming for me, but if you like a mouthful of spice, this is the plate to order.

Banana pound cake with walnuts, rum and chocolate-banana gelato

Despite the fact that we had been feasting, I couldn’t pass up this banana pound cake.  It was moist and fluffy, which was a perfect contrast with the smooth gelato and crunchy walnuts.  It was certainly worth the extra calories!

Tips:

  1. Make a reservation, especially on the weekend!
  2. In good weather, they also have an outdoor patio area.
  3. If you are there during sunset and are sitting near the entrance, you may want to have your sunglasses on because the sunlight can be very intense.

  1. Too bad about the mediocre steak. But shrimps with their heads on is indeed great! The head juice is just great as long as it is fresh and cooked just right. Now we’re craving for good shrimps. :-)

    • Yes, the steak was a bit disappointing to me, but my fiancé thought it was great (perhaps he had more sensitive taste buds). In any case, now that you mention it, I want some head-on shrimp!
